"The Foundation's mission is to help young people of exceptional promise reach their full potential through education."
Statement of Purpose:
The Mike James Scholarship Foundation, Inc (MJSF) is a 501 (C) 3 non-profit, volunteer- managed organization established to help meet the financial needs of deserving students seeking higher education.
MJSF's major focus is to provide programming that offers students:
1. Opportunities to learn, by providing financial assistance to students and by piloting new ways to improve access to post-secondary education.
2. Opportunities to grow, by challenging students to make a difference in their schools and in their communities and by assisting them in developing their longer-term goals.
Founded in 2005 by Mike and Angela James in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Mike James Scholarship Foundation seeks to serve at-risk students from disenfranchised communities with hopes of nurturing their life dreams while providing access to needed resources that will assist students in bringing their dreams to fruition.
MJSF's founder, Mike James, is very passionate about reaching youth from what many has stereotyped as the "hood", however for Mike it was home. Mike was told by so many of his peers that he wouldn't realize his dream nor amount to anything. Yet Mike continued to believe and worked diligently at perfecting his craft knowing that hard work, commitment, and perseverance would one-day payoff. Mike has pledged to offer youth a positive and safe environment in which to grow and develop through effective community partnerships.
Dedicated to education and promoting young leaders, the Foundation's programs bridge gaps where insufficient financial support exists: for young scholars, for community college students transferring to four-year schools, trade/vocational schools and for graduate students.
MJSF will also provide four-year high school scholarships and educational support services to economically disadvantaged eighth grade students in order to ensure they are properly prepared for and have access to a college education. Scholarship recipients must demonstrate academic potential, financial need, moral character and leadership skills. The Mike James Scholarship Foundation offers a cadre of educational support services including: language skills enhancement, mentoring, summer job opportunities, and college counseling. These programs enrich the Scholars' high school experience and support their efforts to obtain a college education.
The program mobilizes and unites local citizens and encourages local students to reach for and achieve their educational goals. The Mike James Scholarship Foundation connects young people with caring and supportive adults; positive connections produce the high expectations and strong motivation that all students need to succeed in schooland in life.
The Mike James Scholarship Foundation seeks:
1. To assist deserving students in pursuit of academic and personal achievement,
2. To encourage community and civic service as an integral part of leadership development, and
3. To nurture a sense of pride and confidence in each students cultural heritage and tradition.
Additional Program Objectives:
1. To promote health, physical fitness and the opportunity to achieve competitive excellence by encouraging participation in basketball.
2. To provide a common platform for "youth at risk" to interact with people from different communities and cultures as an alternative approach to youth rehabilitation through recreation that combines high adventure with the satisfaction of competitive problem solving.
3. To provide intervention and mentoring programs that help youth set lifetime goals, while enhancing personal growth, and assisting in the development of a positive self-image. Being surrounded by peers, "youth at risk" will develop strong coping skills in stressful situations.
4. To provide programming that challenges youth physically, intellectually and emotionally.
5. To provide scholarships opportunities for deserving youth and organizations that supports higher learning.
6. To provide programming that enhances the quality of life of families and youth we serve across America.
7. To carry on any other lawful charitable, civic, and educational activities consistent with the requirements and constraints of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (the"Code").
Mike James an Amityville native and professional basketball player doesn't like to talk about what he'll do next. Even after winning an NBA championship in June of 2004 as a backup point guard with the Detroit Pistons. James's lofty ambitions for his future in the league and beyond are, according to him, usually met with natural skepticism. A major focus is providing deserving youth access to higher educational opportunities through the Mike James Scholarship Foundation.
Underestimated throughout his entire career, it's something he has grown accustomed to. In fact, James claims that it has been his doubters who have provided him with some of the strongest motivation to succeed and realize his dreams. Using their negativity as fuel to propel himself, he has managed to prove gloomy predictions wrong every step of the way.
James said, "I had a lot of people telling me that I couldn't, that I wouldn't and that I shouldn't. I used that negative energy towards positive things and set out to make a believer of everyone."
It all began in high school. Despite posting an illustrious career at Amityville in the early 90s, James was told by peers, coaches and scouts alike that he would never be able to play Division I basketball. Attending Duquesne on a scholarship, he quickly showed not only that he could merely compete at the collegian level, but also that he could excel even at its highest levels of play. In his senior year-despite Duquesne's mediocre record-James was named to the all-Atlantic 10 Conference 1st team.
Scoffed at next were his ambitions to play professionally, a seemingly natural progression judging from his college success. This time his critics' disbelief seemed almost justified. Undrafted after graduating in 1998, James had no forum in which to showcase his skills because of an NBA lockout that year. There were no rookie training camps and Duquesne's lack of reputation failed to open doors.
"Having a dream and a desire is what has kept me going during the tough times," James said. "I wasn't going to let anyone or anything take my dream away from me."
James gutted it out in the European professional leagues and continued to excel. Playing for Austria's St. Poelten he won the Austrian championship in the 1998-99 season and went on to play in the Austrian all-star game. His exploits did not go unnoticed and in 2001 James signed with the Miami Heat. In 2003 he joined the Boston Celtics and was their starting point guard for 55 games before being traded midseason to the Pistons. During his short tenure with the Celtics, James led the team in assists (4.4) and was the third-leading scorer (10.7 points), stats that, for him, constituted a breakout season. Although James knew that his minutes would shrink in Detroit as point guard Chauncey Billups' backup, he also knew that the squad was something special. James consequently let his personal goals take a backseat for the sake of team success; the type of sacrifice that fit in perfectly with Detroit's superb chemistry and unselfishness.
"What stands out in my mind about the season is all 14 of those guys," James said. "That was the best team that I've ever played for in my career. We were so close I could seriously say we were all friends. Sometimes you have teams where the guys are just teammates, it's business, but on this team the guys were all genuinely close and that carried over to the basketball court." Having won a championship that has eluded some of basketball's greatest players, James feels his NBA career is off to a perfect start. He signed with the Milwaukee Bucks on August 5th, 2004 and then later traded to the Houston Rockets in February of 2005. Mike is currently the starting point guard for the Toronto Raptors and plans to continue his ascension in the league through hard work and discipline. Mike believes that this is going to be a breakout season and many of his past critics are in for a pleasant surprise.
While negativity from both his friends and foes has confronted James along his path of success, he is excited at the recognition he is finally starting to garner for his accomplishments. Suffolk County officially declared July 29th as "Mike James Day."
"Awesome, one of the top five things that has ever happened to me," James said. "The county dedicated a day to me for all the hard work and for not giving up. What I've come from and seen on the street - for me to overcome it and to know that the entire county acknowledges that, words can't describe how I feel. It's just amazing to know that my hard work and struggles are finally paying off."
When you don't have a silver spoon, everything that you get you appreciate more. I want to teach them that they can make it all they have to do is work hard, dream big, and never give up." It was this motivation that moved Mike and Angela (Wife) James to launch the Mike James Scholarship Foundation in February 2005. Mike and Angela are the proud parents of two lovely daughters Jadon and Amaya.
Program Strategies
The Mike James Scholarship Foundation suggests three critical factors to address in order to improve gaps in college enrollment rates:
# High educational aspirations: In order to close the achievement gap, more students must desire to attend college. Intervention on this front must start earlier than high school. High school graduates whose parents did not attend college tend to report lower educational aspirations than their peers as early as eighth grade. Low educational aspirations affect students' curricular choices, as well as their selection of peer groups.
# Strong academic preparation: Develop more effective tutoring and mentoring programs with stronger emphasis on college course preparation. Low-income and ethnic minority students are least likely to enroll in a college-preparatory curriculum, so this effort should address the courses that all students must take.
# Financial support. Many low-income students simply cannot afford to go to college without scholarship support and reduced tuition options. However, despite the significant financial aid available, college "sticker prices" remain a barrier to first-generation students. Rising college costs coupled with flat or declining family incomes have created unmet financial needs - ranging from $3200 (for students attending public two-year colleges) to $6200 (for students attending private four-year colleges).
Prevention and Intervention Strategies
Mike James Scholarship Foundation, INC proposed prevention strategies are based on the results of a thorough analysis of community risk and protective factors, an assessment of research service gaps, as well as research on successful juvenile programming. The following is a non-exhaustive list of the prevention program activities that will be featured in our lesson plan:
* Mentoring programs
* Conflict resolution and violence prevention curricula
* Parent training and effective parenting programs
* Peer counseling and mediation programs
* After-school educational and development opportunities programs
* Alcohol and substance abuse prevention services
* Youth leadership development activities
The Mike James Scholarship Foundation program curriculum includes an after-school mentorship program for high school/middle school age students. Participating students are trained as peer mentors and provided with skills and materials to deliver a six part (45 min / session) drug and violence resistance educational booster program for 11-14 year olds and 15-18 year olds. This drug and violence prevention program is designed as follow-up to initial drug and/or violence resistance programs like Life Skills typically delivered the year before.
Prevention and Intervention Program Purpose:
* Intervene Early in Life and/or Early in the Risk Trajectory: Activities that target young children or youth before they display risky behaviors, and include their families. o Strengthen Families: Examples would be parent training, family counseling and family skills training. o Offer Social Skills Training: Activities that teach specific pro-social, problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills and also decision-making and assertiveness skills. o Offer Integrated Approach if Being Instituted in Schools: School-based programs need to incorporate activities with the overall school culture and regular classroom curriculum. o Provide Intensive Adult Attention: Mentors, counselors, teachers, etc. must engage youth both with intensity and for a long enough period of time. o Provide Competent, Qualified Staff Who Have Specific Training to Implement the Chosen Activity: Adequate training for staff is essential for those who will be implementing any activity. o All Activities Should: be accessible, be flexible; respect confidentiality; whenever possible, be comprehensive rather than fragmented; and involve youth in meaningful decision making roles, always.
Life Planning Strategies
The Mike James Scholarship Foundation life skills training strategy targets a diverse range of teens to assist them in developing effective life planning skills and to increase their expectation for higher education. Lessons covered promote healthy life skills: self-image and self-improvement; decision-making; alcohol and marijuana information; anxiety; communication/social skills; assertiveness. Audience: 6th through 12th graders. Curriculum: 4 lesson plans for 6th graders. 6 lessons for 7ths graders and 5 lessons for 8th - 12th graders. Reported effectiveness: 75% reduction in tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana use; 66% reduction in polydrug use; effective with white, African-American and Hispanic youth, 45% improvement in youth choosing higher education alternatives. The main goal of the Life Skills Program is to improve decision making skills and to prevent gateway substance abuse among adolescents by making a positive impact on improving protective factors and reducing the risk factors that are normally associated with the use of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana. The focus will specifically target occasional and experimental drug use. The view of this program is from a cognitive-behavioral approach to prevention and intends to instill in youth general life and drug refusal skills in order to make them less vulnerable to risk factors.
The four main objectives of the Life Skills Training program are: 1. Teach prevention-related information 2. Promote anti-drug norms 3. Teach drug refusal skills 4. Foster the development of personal self-management skills and general social skills
The program will accomplish the aforementioned objectives by implementing the following strategies:
o
o Teach students to resist peer and media pressure to smoke, drink, or use drugs
o Enable students to develop a positive self-image about themselves
o Teach the students decision-making and problem-solving skills
o Train the students how to manage their anxiety
o Instruct students on utilizing effective communications skills to avoid misunderstandings
o Encourage students to build healthy relationships with their peers, family and community
o Teach students to handle social situations with confidence
The Life Skills Training curriculum specifically addresses two major goals. The first is to decrease substance use within the target area with sixth - twelfth grade students at our target co-op sites. The second goal is to develop the personal and social skills of these students. Research has shown that there are four major factors that promote illegal substance use. The first is familial influences; youth are at greater risk for drug use if parents, and older siblings use drugs. The second is the media, which depicts substance use (alcohol, tobacco) as acceptable, popular, powerful, fun and sexy. The third is peer pressure, and the fourth is lack of personal and social skills.
A total of 150 students are expected to participate each year in the program. The Life Skills Training Coordinator instructs the entire after-school session, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Student class time is 55 minutes once a week. In class the students play a game called "jeopardy life skills" where they are divided into four groups with an average of six students per group. The players are given a series of questions based on what they learned from the program. They are given points for each question, as a group, and the highest score wins. Typically, the beginning of class time covers previous lessons as a review, which assists with the game.
Projected goals:
o 29% reduction of pro-marijuana attitudes.
o 39% reduction of pro-hard drugs attitudes.
o 35% reduction of pro-drinking attitudes.
o 45% increase of drug refusal skills.
o 51% increase of decision-making skills.
o 70% increase of general assertiveness skills.
Lesson Plan Snapshot
SESSION I: YOUR STORY - Each program participant will be challenged to define his or her life story and develop strategies to realize positive life goals.
